“I think we could have used a better ground game, a term I wasn’t even familiar with,”
Now there IS very little argument against the first half of Trumps statement, if youre leading in the polls, and by a decent amount (as Trump was) and you lose......its pretty much a sure fire thing you needed a better ground game.
Its the second half of that sentence where things go off the rails. "ground game, a term I wasn’t even familiar with."
Now I know what you may be thinking "dude I dont know what ground game is either" Fair enough.....but your also not running for president (I assume, though honestly if a presidential candidate is reading this that would be EPIC).
Basically "ground game" is short hand for "local get out the vote" efforts. This would be things like having people go door to door, make phone calls, give away free shit with your name on it, set out campaign signs ect, give out campaign literature, send out election day times and location information to get people to the polls ect. basically anything you can do to get people to vote.
This is not exactly an advanced concept either, even some one whos career accomplishment so far is "ran for mayor of Weeki Wachee, Florida (population 12)" knows what this is, and that you need to do it to win.
But, as Trump would tell you, he's not a politician, so maybe he really is that stupid.
Except the other thing Donald Trump will tell you (if you let him speak for more than 4 seconds) is that he's a great businessman, a 'UGE success.
Which of course would mean Trump would do what all great businessmen do when confronted with a situation in which they know nothing: Hire somebody who does. And given that Trump claims he has more money that God (and God by the way is tax except so its easier for Him to amass it) he could afford literally the best campaign manager money can buy.
And you'd think, given that a good businessman like Trump would hire the best, that at somepoint in the 8 months Trump has been running this guy would have maybe explained the basic concepts to Trump?
Actually it turns out maybe he did......and thats were things get even worse.
Here is the same quote I gave you before, with the sentences that immediately followed it:
“You know, when you hear ‘ground game,’ you say what the hell is that? Now I’m familiar with it. But, you know, I think in retrospect we should have had a better ground game. I would have funded a better ground game, but people told me our ground game was fine. And by most standards it was.”
So the implication here is that Trump DID hire someone with a functional brain to run his campaign (disclaimer, Trump's campaign manager is named Corey Lewandowski, but other than that I know nothing about them, or their previous successes or failures so I reserve the right to revoke the assumption of brain functionality). And that this person told Trump they had a good ground game.
And Donald Trump confronted with a word he didnt know, smiled and nodded, in much the same way the last girl I hit on did when I told her she had nice infrahyoids.
No real attempt to actually understand what the word meant, or even why its important. Cause you know, who needs to actually understand HOW things work to be a successful deal maker (as Trump claims he is). After all it is much easier to think you made a great deal when you dont actually understand what it says....you can just pretend the words mean whatever you want.
And really, is understanding how things work part of being a great manager? (as trump claims to be) Of course not.....the best managers just wildly stab in the dark at shit.
Also theres the odd implication that Lewandowski lied to trump when he had a good ground game, and had he been honest, Trump would have thrown a shit ton of money at it......despite having NO IDEA what it was.
And what makes this especially odd, is that last I checked Lewandowski is still employees by Trump.
You know, the same Donald Trump who is famous for telling employees who make mistakes or dont meet his standards:
Cause firing employees who dont perform or cost the company is actually what great managers do.
Basically what I am getting at is, for Trump's excuse here to be remotely legit, everything Trump has told us about why he would be a good president has to be nothing more than a shoddily constructed lie and he's basically a total fraud. And I dont just mean his presidential run. I mean his alleged business success, his negotiating skills. the alleged massive amount of money he made (as opposed to inherited) all of it.
To be fair, thats not shocking or newsworthy to anyone with a functional brain,.....the only real shocking thing here is that hes actually outright admitting it. This I believe would be the first time Trump's actually self admitted he's full of shit.

Side note by the way (mostly cause I find this video clip too entertaining to pass up), Donald Trump has been a fraud for a long time, even before running for president. He even stole his famous catchphrase from someone else (and like all rip offs made it massively inferior). This is how the original looks:
Now a counter point based on my own personal opinion of the Trump candidacy as a whole: I dont actually think Donald Trump is running for president. I mean yes I realize he is campaigning for the job, his names on ballots ect. I just think he doesnt actually want to win. I believe Trump's best skill has ALWAYS been self promoting, and hes smart enough and good enough at that skill to realize he has a far better future as far as his ability to promote himself as "failed presidential candidate" Donald Trump, especially if he can make it look like the republican party screwed him (consider that belief alone would get him any attention he wanted anytime he wanted it all over far right news sources for the next decade at least) then he ever would as ex president Trump.
To that end, Trump intentionally didnt try to win Iowa and didnt set up a ground game, so he can start the narrative (as hes already done) that the state was "stolen" from him by the winner.....which might wind up being the reason he doesnt get the nomination......so that person (cruz as it turned out) conspired to steal from him the presidency, and therefore He, Trump should have been the nominee.
And boom there you have it, the narrative he will sell for the next 4 years to enable him to promote himself at will. Of course even in this version, its likely this was a slip up as in either case it makes it clear he's not exactly "as advertised" as far as his campaign goes.
I mention this only as an equally likely explanation to explanation I mentioned above......that Trump is actually a fraud and just slipped up and admitted to the con. But really its 6 of one, a half dozen of the other as to which is more likely.
